Is Indonesia's native music fading?

Although IHT is only discussing the gamelan orchestra, it's true, the Indonesian traditional music (and instruments!) are facing a real threat!

It's sad, I know. Looking back to my school days, the only music instrument compulsory for us to learn was just the recorder. Seriously, how can you make a decent music out of a recorder?!! There wasn't even any extracurricular activity that could allow us to appreciate the Indonesian musical heritage.

It is embarrassing to learn that the international public has greater interest to this than we Indonesians do. Even the Lion King Musical director Julie Taymor studied Indonesian puppetry in Jakarta, and you can see how its technique has affected her interpretation of the musical. How ironic.

I can also say that we Indonesians have never been creative enough to sell the music as part of a more popular, easily accepted culture. Think about the difference between didgeridoos and gamelans. Somehow, indigenous music in a country such as Australia is better preserved, and frankly, appreciated.

Out of the many recording artistes in Indonesia, I know only one that fused the Indonesian music into their work: Krakatau…

Although their music is not my cup of tea, but I’m quite happy to know that there is such ensemble. And I wish to see more musicians such as Krakatau. Too bad I'm not very good at music :p

very interesting blog u have there, siska! yes, it's a pity that we don't really appreciate indonesian traditional music. we are told to appreciate or to be proud of our culture in general, but words are not enough! we have to touch it, feel it, experience it, and learn it in order to appreciate our music. how can we appreciate or be proud of something when in fact... we know nothing about it.
